Dr. Thompson Hits Milestone for Rare Vein Compression Surgery

Vascular surgeon Robert W. Thompson, MD, performed the 1,000th operation at Barnes-Jewish Hospital to treat a rare type of thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS), a group of potentially disabling disorders that occur when blood vessels or nerves become compressed in the space between the collarbone and the first rib. Dr. Thompson is the only surgeon in the world to perform this number of procedures targeting venous TOS, which is caused by damage to the major veins in the lower neck and upper chest.

Pilot Program Provides Apartments to Homeless Emergency Department Patients

Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Patrick Center are partners in an innovative pilot program that provides apartments to homeless patients who frequently seek shelter in the hospital’s emergency department (ED). The aim of the program is to move vulnerable individuals into stable, long-term housing along with the critical social and health care services they need, while at the same time reducing hospital costs.

Evers, MD, a leading anesthesiology physician-scientist, educator and visionary leader, is the recipient of the 2019 President’s Achievement Award given by The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital.  The award was announced Dec. 10 at the Foundation’s annual event to honor clinical and faculty partners.

White installed as first Stokes Family Endowed Chair in Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care

National palliative care expert Patrick White, MD, was installed on Nov. 18, as The Stokes Family Endowed Chair in Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care. Dr. White is the chief medical officer of BJC Home Care and Hospice and leads Evelyn’s House, the adult and pediatric hospice house located on the campus of Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital.

Nancy Carroll Allen Supports Alton High Graduates With Full Nursing Scholarships

Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College has received an unprecedented gift that will provide, annually, a full scholarship to an Alton High School student or graduate pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. This is the first Goldfarb scholarship that covers total tuition and fees.
