On August 11, 2022, Benjamin D. Humphreys, MD, PhD, a nephrologist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the Joseph Friedman professor of renal diseases in medicine and chief, division of nephrology guided us through a leading-edge presentation about the efforts being made to identify patterns of gene expression that predict functional capacity at the time of organ procurement.
At least one fifth of the kidneys that are procured for transplant purposes in the U.S. are discarded. As the gap between the demand and the supply of transplantable organs continues to expand, new and more effective strategies must be developed to minimize the discard rate.
